Merab Berdzenishvili

BIOGRAPHY

Merab Berdzenishvili (1929–2016) was a Georgian sculptor renowned for his monumental public works and expressive figurative sculptures. Born in Georgia, he studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts under Professor Nikoloz Kandelaki.
Berdzenishvili’s oeuvre combines grandiose scale with narrative intimacy, creating monuments that reflect Georgian history, culture, and collective memory.

Throughout his career, he received numerous honors, including the title People’s Artist of the USSR (1987), and became a central figure in the development of modern Georgian sculpture.
His works are celebrated for their technical mastery, formal clarity, and emotional resonance, blending traditional influences with contemporary sensibilities.
