Niko Pirosmani

BIOGRAPHY
Niko Pirosmani (1862–1918) is a legendary Georgian painter and the country’s most celebrated national artist, widely revered as one of the most important representatives of Georgian naive art. He was entirely self-taught and never received formal professional education, discovering his profound vocation independently while growing up in the Kakheti region and later spending most of his life working in Tbilisi.
Pirosmani’s extensive practice was deeply rooted in the local culture of Old Tbilisi, where he created distinctive scenes of daily life, landscapes, and iconic animal paintings characterized by a reduced visual language, strong contours, and a unique poetic atmosphere.Alongside a unique artistic legacy that posthumously influenced global avant-garde movements and master artists like Pablo Picasso, his work has been honored in major international showcases, including modern comprehensive retrospectives at the Fondation Beyeler and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
